Welcome to our latest addition of resources to support parents, carers and visitors in getting to know ‘our maths’. These videos have been produced by members of the Q1E maths team to guide those new to the current mastery approach to the teaching of mathematics. From the overview video of how maths teaching and learning is approached in our school to the year group specific teaching videos of place value and the four operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, these videos are both useful informative and helpful to parents and carers in supporting children at home.

Place Value
Understanding place value is vital to understanding number and is perhaps the most important idea we teach in maths. As such, we always begin the new school year with it to ensure we are building the rest of our curriculum on strong foundations. Understanding place value supports our children when they go onto learning the four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as mental methods such as estimating and rounding and, later in the year, converting measures. Many year groups will then go on to widen their understanding of place value to incorporate decimal amounts.
